Description

Zhengzhou like most Chinese cities is experiencing a rapid rate of motorization with increasing numbers of private vehicles. The objective of the Project is to establish an efficient, safe, rapid, convenient, comfortable and effective modern mass transit system based on a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Zhengzhou is the capital of the Province of Henan and has a population of around 3.5 million inhabitants.

The pre-project scenario is the usage of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), diesel and electric trolleybuses, taxis, passenger cars and NMT (Non-Motorized Transport) for transit purposes with around 100 km of bus-only lanes. All of these transit modes are partially substituted by the project. Users of taxis and passenger cars are motivated to use the project system as it offers an attractive trip mean in terms of convenience, time, safety, price and reliability. The current baseline public transit system lacks this convenience especially in terms of time and reliability as buses are stuck in traffic just like private cars or taxis. With the BRT system buses have priority and can move faster thus increasing the relative attractiveness of public transit versus taxis and private means of transit.

Benefits to the environment

Improved environment through less GHG and other air pollutant emissions, specifically particle matter, NOx and sulphur dioxide. This is achieved through a more efficient transport system and through new buses. Average expected emission reductions of the project are 204,715 tCO2 avoided per annum.

Social benefits

Improved social wellbeing as a result of less time lost in congestion, less respiratory diseases due to less particle matter pollution, less noise pollution and fewer accidents per passenger transported.

Economic benefits

Zhengzhou can improve its competitive position by offering an attractive and modern transit system reducing also the economic costs of congestion.
