Ranga Reddy District, Ranga Reddy North Circle, Habsiguda Division, Central Power Distribution Company of Andhra Pradesh Limited, Andhra Pradesh
This is a project under a Small-Scale Programme of Activities (SSC-PoA). Under the Bachat Lamp Yojana scheme, quality self-ballasted Compact Fluorescent lamps (CFLs) would be distributed by small scale Clean Development Mechanism programme activity (SSC-CPA) implementer(s) to grid connected residential households in exchange of an incandescent lamp (ICL) and INR 15. Approximately 600,000 CFLs can be distributed within a single SSC-CPA limit of 60 GWh7.
The Bachat Lamp Yojana PoA is a scheme developed by Bureau of Energy Efficiency, India (BEE) to promote energy efficient lighting in India. There are no mandatory requirements in India requiring the use of energy efficient CFL at the household level.
To bridge the cost differential between the market price of the CFLs and the price at which they are distributed to households, the CDM is harnessed. The SSC-CPA implementer(s) would cover the project cost through sale of GHG emission reductions achieved in their respective CPA areas.
Benefits to the environment
reducing greenhouse gas emissions
protecting/enhancing forests: As the CFLs produce energy savings, there is a reduction in the use of coal
Sustainable Development, Economic & Social Benefits
creation of local-skilled jobs peaked during the distribution period. On average, 100-150 local jobs were created per CPA
following the CDM guidelines as noted in the PDD, surveys are run every 3 years which involved a number of surveyors collecting information/performance of the CFLs in a large number of households
local force hired for the implementation of the CPAs (distribution of CFLs) are trained before implementation starts
awareness programs are run before distribution, training the consumers on the benefits of the program
spread knowledge on the benefits of CFLs for the community: savings in energy consumption resulting in a Highly 4 significant reduction in electricity bill (estimated at around 10% of households expenditure savings)
more hours of electricity; black outs due to power loss are reduced as the consumption of electricity per household is reduced by the use of CFLs
10% of savings in the electricity bill per month per household is equivalent to a week of groceries
